Living Stones (Lithops)

General Care

Light Requirements: Living Stones are native to the arid regions of southern Africa, and they'll thrive in bright, indirect light. Place them on a south - or west-facing windowsill for optimal results. Be cautious—too much direct sunlight can scorch their delicate bodies.

Watering: One of the most critical aspects of Lithops care is proper watering. These succulents have adapted to store water in their thick, fleshy leaves, so they prefer infrequent but thorough watering. During the active growth period in spring and autumn, water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between watering sessions. In summer, when they're dormant, refrain from watering altogether.

Humidity: Living Stones thrive in low-humidity environments. There's no need for additional humidity control. In fact, too much moisture can lead to rot, so it's best to keep them in a well-ventilated area.

Soil Requirements: Plant your Lithops in a well-draining, sandy cactus mix. A mix of sand, perlite, or pumice will mimic their natural habitat and prevent soggy roots. Terra cotta pots are also excellent choices, allowing excess moisture to evaporate.

Common Problems and How to Prevent Them:

Overwatering: The most common mistake is overwatering. Remember, Lithops like to be thirsty. To avoid this, stick to a strict watering schedule and ensure the soil dries between sessions. Use a well-draining potting mix to prevent water from sitting around the roots.

Pest Infestations: Lithops are relatively pest-resistant, and mealybugs and aphids can sometimes be problematic. Regularly inspect your plants, and if you notice any unwelcome visitors, gently wipe them off with a damp cloth or use insecticidal soap as needed.

Fun Facts!

  1. Mimicry Masters: Lithops' appearance is often likened to small stones or pebbles, providing them with natural camouflage that helps them evade herbivores.
  2. Lifespan Luminaries: These succulents are exceptionally long-lived. They can live for several decades with proper care, and some can even reach a century!
  3. Blossoming Beauties: Lithops might appear unassuming, but they surprise with vibrant, daisy-like flowers in shades of yellow, white, or pink during their flowering season.
  4. Variety Galore: There are over 200 recognized species of Lithops, each with its unique markings and colours, making them a collector's dream.
